With spring in full bloom, there really has never been a better time to slip behind the wheel of your Nissan and take on the open road with peace of mind. Whether your trip takes you sea-bound or city-bound, your Nissan will give a whole new meaning to a getaway. While your Nissan will handle the performance, it is your job to make sure that the trip is all planned out. Taking time to prepare for a trip is important for making sure you don’t hit any bumps in the road. So check out our helpful tips below and start planning your next getaway because summer is right around the corner and there is nothing like hitting the road, with the windows down, and confidence in your hands.

  • Take some time to decide on a destination. Decide if you want to go far or stay closer to home, do you want to get the mountain tops or city streets? Once you’ve decided on where to go, decide if you’ll be able to make it back in one day and if so what time should you go, arrive, and head back home. If you have to stay the night be sure to start looking for a hotel or place to stay sooner rather than later (prices go up).
  • Choose a route. Many people who take road trips like to take the scenic route to their destination. If this is you, check out your GPS and see the different ways you can go to get to your destination. However, if you’re only planning a day trip, it might be better to find the quickest way to get there because of the time restriction.
  • Consider the right vehicle. Some vehicles are simply not made for long drives. Depending on the number of people taking the trip with you, the right car might be different. If you’re packing in the whole family it is no surprise that an SUV or crossover is the best way for you to go. You’ll need space to get everyone in and be comfortable. If you’re looking to save a buck on gas opt for a sedan that has great fuel economy! If you’re looking for a new ride before hitting the road, we have a wide variety of vehicles for you to choose from, whether it be an SUV, sedan, or even truck, we can match you with the best option for your needs!
  • Get a tune-up. The best thing you can do before hitting the road, regardless of how far you’re traveling, is to get a tune-up. You want to make sure there is no chance of breaking down or mechanical issues. Make sure to get your fluid levels topped off, check for engine problems, and make sure all of your lights are working.
  • Bring entertainment. Of course, the drive has to be focused on the road. However, passengers might want some entertainment to make the trip more bearable, especially if you’re taking a big trip. We suggest planning some car games for younger passengers and bring electric entertainment like phones, tablets, headphones, and even magazines, books, journals, etc.

Looking to get an upgrade for your spring/summer travel! Right now is the perfect time to stop into Loughead Nissan to find the perfect Nissan for you! Happy Car Care Month! We hope you have been taking full advantage of the warm weather by hitting the road for some fun in the sun. Speaking of hitting the road, we want to remind you how important it is to service your car before hitting the road. Putting off service is a common thought for many drivers, but it’s not a safe one. Without regular maintenance, it’s a stronger possibility you run into issues on the road ahead. In order to avoid that, regular maintenance is strongly recommended. However, there is DIY maintenance that many Nissan drivers can complete from the comfort of their own home – like topping off their fluid levels! Not sure what fluid levels you should be looking out for? No problem, take a peek below for all you need to know about your Nissan’s fluid levels and get better peace of mind when you hit the road this spring/summer.

Engine Oil:

Your engine needs oil in order to keep moving parts lubricated and working properly. To check your oil, make sure your engine is cool before popping open the hood. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it on a clean rag, reinsert the stick all the way back into the tank. Pull out the stick and see where the oil line hits, there will be a notch that indicates what a safe oil level is. If your oil hits below the notch, check for the specific type of oil and add some yourself.

Transmission Fluid:

Transmission fluid is important because it keeps your transmission lubricated and will save you from expensive repairs. The second dipstick in your engine is for this fluid. Like we did to check the engine’s oil, you will have to remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and reinsert it back into the tank. Pull it back out and examine where the fluid hits on the stick, it’s also a good idea to check the quality of your fluids. Wipe a small amount onto your fingers, if the fluid has a pink or clear look to it, it is fine. If the fluid smells burnt or has particles in it, it is time to swap it out.

Brake Fluid:

From a safety standpoint, this is one of the most important fluids. Brake fluid basically keeps you from running into other cars and objects. You’ll find the brake fluid reservoir toward the back under your hood, be sure to clean off the outside of the compartment so any dirt or dust doesn’t enter the reservoir. Open up the cap and look inside to see where the fluid level is. It should be about a half-inch from the cap. If it is lower than that, check your owner’s manual for what fluid you should use. Also, if the fluid has a dark tint to it, bring your vehicle into our service department for a change of fluids.

Power Steering Fluid:

It’s important to have control over your car and this fluid keeps the right parts lubricated to ensure a safe driving experience. This reservoir is typically found under the hood, on the passenger side with a cap that will likely say “steering” on it. Many cars have a light-colored reservoir so you can see the level of fluid without removing the cap. If your car has a dark reservoir, clean off the cap before opening it to avoid dirt particles from entering the system. Open up the cap and use the dipstick the same way as we did before, if the fluid is low, you can easily add more. Also, if your fluid level is low, check for a leak in the system.

Windshield Washer Fluid:

One important part of driving is being able to see out the windshield, this fluid is key to ensure that happens. Most vehicles have a clear washer fluid tank that will be labeled either “washer” or “windshield.” If you need to add more, simply pop the cap off and pour it into the tank. Do not use soap and water if you are completely empty!! But, the window cleaner that you use at home can work until you fill up with the real stuff.

As we switch gears from winter to spring, it’s important to remind yourself that driving in spring is a lot different than driving in winter. With the warmer weather coming in there are a lot more distractions to keep an eye out for. For example, more pedestrians, cyclists, runners, and especially construction workers! Plus, the winter has left its mark on our roads with huge potholes that can cause lots of damage to your vehicle. So while you’re rocking out to your favorite song with the windows down, it’s important to keep an eye out for the road ahead! Check out our spring driving tips below and if you’re in need of a new ride for all of your spring adventures, be sure to browse our available inventory now and schedule a test drive!

Be On The Lookout For Potholes: Winter weather takes a big toll on our roadways, which leads to some pretty nasty potholes. If you’re speeding down the road and don’t slow down in time and hit a pothole, then chances are that your vehicle is gonna have some serious damage. Damage can include a punctured tire, bent rim, suspension damage, poor alignment, and exhaust system damage.

Slow Down For Spring Showers: Did you know that roads are most slippery when it first starts to rain? This is caused by rainwater mixing with contaminants on the road, such as oil and grease. Make sure to increase your following distance to allow for proper braking.

Watch For Animals On The Move: Animal activity is up when the weather starts getting nicer. That means keep an eye out and drive slow especially for animals like deer that are known to be out at dusk and dawn.

Watch For Pedestrians: Similar to animals, people tend to be out and about more when the weather starts getting warmer. Whether that means there are more walkers, cyclists or kids play hopscotch. Be sure to slow down especially in residential neighborhoods and busy streets.

Share The Road With Motorcycles: Spring is when the motorcycle riders come out, and because of their speed and size, they may come in and out of your blind spots quickly. Be sure to listen to the sound of their bike and take a few extra seconds before switching lanes. If you are following a motorcycle, remember to leave a good amount of space in between.

Maintain Proper Tire Pressure: During the winter months, your tires lose air due to the cold temperatures, this causes your tire to be under-deflated. Vice-versa, warm weather will cause them to be over-inflated. Each situation can lead to increased wear and poor handling.

Inspect Your Tires: Spring will bring the showers and when that happens making sure your tire tread is in shape is important to the quality of your driving. Just like snow, rain makes the road slippery, and having good tires will make or break your driving experience. Remember to use easy tricks like the penny test to check your tire tread and regularly check your tire pressure if your vehicle doesn’t display it for you.

Pay Attention In Construction Zones: When the snow washes away and the spring days are here to stay, construction will start up again. One thing to keep in mind is that construction zones ask you to slow down for a reason, do it. Remember to…

  • Be attentive. Construction workers and equipment may suddenly enter the roadway. Traffic patterns can change daily to accommodate the work being done.
  • Understand and follow the signs.
  • Make safe lane changes. Solid lines in construction zones mean that you should stay in your lane.
  • Slow down. Fines may be doubled in construction zones. In addition, slowing down can save a life.

  • Take a peek at your hoses and belts to make use they haven’t been cracked due to cold weather and wear and tear.
  • Check your battery to make sure the connection is clean, tight, and corrosion-free.
  • Make sure to get your ride an oil change and have the brake linings, rotors, and drums inspected.
  • Often overlooked, but important; be sure to check your exhaust system for leaks and damaged or broken supports or hangers if there is an unusual noise.
  • Tune it up with a tune-up to help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy
  • Check the heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, as proper heating and cooling performance is critical for safety reasons and interior comfort in the spring/summer months
  •  Inspect the steering and suspension system
  • Check your tire pressure and tread depth to see if it’s time for a new set. Also keep an eye out for uneven tread wear, which indicates that your vehicle needs a wheel alignment.

Give Your Vehicle A Good Wash

  • Winter can be tough on your vehicle’s exterior. Freezing temperatures and salt from the road can do real damage to your paint job, so make sure to start the season with a car wash.
  • If you choose to go to a car wash, go for the premium wash to get all the nooks and crannies and a deep clean after months of harsh road conditions.
  • If you do it yourself, make sure to add baking soda to the wash water if your car has a strong salt buildup. This will help neutralize the salt and save your paint job.

Tire Check

  • When it looks like the snow is finally done falling, be sure to switch from your snow tires to your all-season tires.
  • Once you have your tires back on, be sure to grab your owners manual to find the Manufacturer recommended air pressure. Not only is this important for alignment, but also can give you better gas mileage and save your money at the tank!
  • Make sure your tires are rotated regularly and don’t wait until you have a visible flat to fill them up.
  • Check your tires for worn tread and make sure to replace your tires when the tread becomes too worn. If you’re not sure if you need new tires, use the penny test to determine!

Battery Check

  • After a long brutal winter, you’re going to want to check your battery’s life.
  • Stop by the dealership for a battery test to see the life of your car’s battery. If your battery is getting weak, you can prevent future problems by replacing it before it stops working.
  • If you find you’re in need of a new battery, be sure to check out our service offers page to see if you can take advantage of any battery offers!

Replace Wiper Blades and Fluids

  • Snow, sleet, and ice can cause wear on your windshield wipers – and it’s no secret how dirty your windows get with slush getting kicked up at you on the road. This means spring is the perfect time to get new wiper blades and top off your windshield wiper fluid levels for all the spring rain coming your way very soon.
  • New wiper blades are inexpensive and simple to replace, so you won’t even need to pay someone to do it for you. However, our team of experts is always here to help you if needed!

Oil Change

  • Your vehicle works hard to get you where you need to go, especially during the winter months. That’s why spring is the perfect time to give your care the TLC/pick-me-up your vehicle needs.
  • Regular oil changes can make all the difference in making sure your car has a long, healthy life.
  • Whether your vehicle needs a regular oil change or synthetic oil change, our team is here to assist you!
  • Be sure to check out our service offers page to see what offers are available to you!
  • If you will be performing the oil change on your own, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s suggestions for oil change intervals and oil viscosity, and make sure to change the oil filter as well.
