The summer is all about DIY! Don’t know what DIY is? Well, let me tell you! DIY stands for do it yourself, and it can be applied to literally anything! Yup, that means car maintenance too! So if you’re not a big fan of heading into the dealership to have other people do work on your vehicle that you are capable of doing yourself, then you’re going to love this week’s blog!

This week we are focusing on DIY car washes and detailing. Many of us probably don’t see the importance of washing our vehicle regularly because the rain does it for us, right? WRONG! That might wash away dust and debris, but it isn’t going to wash away the tough grime that has accumulated on your vehicle. Plus, the longer that grim stays on your vehicle and tires the more damage it could do. So that means it’s time to roll up your sleeves and grab your products because we’re about to throw some straight up facts at you!

If you’re not a DIY individual that’s okay too! All you have to do to get your vehicle back into tip-top shape and looking as good as it feels is schedule a service appointment with us and head on into Loughead Nissan today!

Part 1: Wash Your Vehicle

  • Washing your vehicle regularly keeps dirt, debris, and gritty residue that can accumulate over time, off your exterior.
  • Start washing your vehicle from the top (the roof) down.  Use a soft-bristled brush, in small, circular motions, to remove more stubborn stains and grease. Use a microfiber cloth to clean less dirty areas.
  • DO NOT USE REGULAR DISH SOAP.
  • These substances are designed to remove grease and oil, and they can damage your car’s finish, not to mention strip away the vehicle’s protective wax coating.
  • It is important to rinse your vehicle as you go to prevent the soap and water from drying on your vehicle.
  • Try not to take too long while washing your car so that the water does not dry, leaving behind mineral deposits in the form of water spots.

Part 2: Drying Your Car

  • Dry your vehicle by hand. Start drying as soon as your done with the basic wash. This keeps water from drying and leaving spots.
  • Use a microfiber towel to absorb the water.
  • DO NOT DRAG THE TOWEL ACROSS THE CAR.
  • Debris and dirt can be trapped under the towel and potentially scratch the paint.
  • Drying your car to remove the majority of the moisture, allow it to air dry completely before proceeding to the detailing phase.

Part 3: Detail Your Car

  • Most often, basic washing does not remove smaller particles and substances that might stick to or are worked into the paint job itself.
  • Items you may need include Compound, Clay bars, Glaze, and Polish.
  • Before using any detailing method, make sure you understand how to use it properly.
  • USE A MICROFIBER MITT OR TOWEL.
  • Don’t forget to clean and shine your tires, which are one of the most overlooked areas of a vehicle. When doing so, clean, wash, and polish one tire at a time to prevent the cleaner from drying on the tires in patches.

Step 4: Wax Your Car

  • After washing, drying, and detailing the outside of your vehicle, seal it with wax. You only need to wax your car about every three months, so this process is not required every time you wash your car.
  • When using a buffer, be careful because overuse could lead to paint removal
  • Apply wax – using a microfiber towel, or a clean buffing pad using the car buffer
  • Allow the wax to set – Proceed with applying the wax a section at a time, allowing the wax to set before removal. Check the wax container for directions on use and recommended wax set times.
  • Buff the wax in – Take a microfiber cloth and use circular motions with the buffer to rub in the wax. Repeat this process until you have waxed the entire surface of the vehicle

Summer is in the air and that means humidity is too. There is no escaping it, usually hot weather means we get humidity and with that comes some pretty crazy storms. Now storms aren’t all bad, they usually do break the humidity, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous. Summer storms tend to be quick but can leave lots of flooding, making it hard to drive in and mask potential hazards in the road. We get a lot of rain here in Pennsylvania, but not as much as other places. If you’ll be hitting the road this summer to unknown places, it might be a good idea to check out our helpful tips below. Below you’ll find tips for making it through a flooded area after or during a storm, and even if you won’t be traveling this summer it’s always good information to have! So check it out and if you find your vehicle is damaged during a storm, just schedule a service appointment with us and we can get your ride back into tip-top- shape!

Do not drive through standing water on roads or in parking lots:

  • It’s easy to think we can just drive through standing water if we go slow, but the truth is the average automobile can be swept off the road in 12 inches of moving water!
  • Driving through water can also stall your engine which could cause damage if you try to restart the engine.
  • If you come along a flooded road or lot, try to find an alternative route to your destination!

Take extra precautions if you’re forced to drive through water:

  • Do your best to estimate the depth of the water (if other cars are driving through, take note of how deep the water is).
  • Drive slowly and steadily through the water.
  • Avoid driving in water that downed electrical or power lines have fallen in — electric current passes through water easily.
  • Watch for items traveling downstream — they can trap or crush you if you’re in their path.
  • If you have driven through water up to the wheel rims or higher, test your brakes on a clear patch of road at low speed. If they are wet and not stopping the vehicle as they should, dry them by pressing gently on the brake pedal with your left foot while maintaining speed with your right foot.
  • Stay off the telephone unless you must report severe injuries.
  • If your vehicle stalls in the deep water, you may need to restart the engine to make it to safety. Keep in mind that restarting may cause irreparable damage to the engine.
  • If you can’t restart your vehicle and you become trapped in rising water, immediately abandon it for higher ground. Try to open the door or roll down the window to get out of the vehicle. If you are unable to get out safely, call 911 or get the attention of a passerby or someone standing on higher ground so that they may call for help.

Hello May! With summer right around the corner, we have officially entered road trip season and that means you need your vehicle to be in tip-top shape to get you from the morning hike to your afternoon at the beach and still make it to the concert later that night. But let’s face it, all that running around can do some wear and tear on your vehicle and when that happens it is important to get your vehicle detailed and clean sooner than later.

If you skip out on giving your vehicle a good old scrubba dub dub, you could potentially cause damage to your vehicle’s exterior, which is bad because not only does it look bad but it also brings the value of your vehicle down. So, this week we want to help ensure your vehicle looks as good as it feels to drive, and if you’re driving a Nissan that feels pretty great. Take a few minutes to learn some tips for cleaning your vehicle’s exterior and if you have any questions feel free to give us a call! If you’re not about the DIY maintenance, no problem, just schedule a service appointment with us and we can get your ride sparkling again in no time!

Loughead Nissan’s Tips For Detailing Your Exterior:

Rule #1: Only use products meant for cleaning automobiles:

  • Using cleaners like dish soap or laundry detergent can strip away your car’s wax leaving the finish unprotected, unlike products meant for automobiles which actually loosens the grime and dirt while nourishing your finish.

Rule #2: Wash your car in the shade:

  • Always wash your car in the shade, if the water dries on the finish before you’ve had a chance to dry it, it could cause spotting.
  • Washing in the shade is also important because a bead of water on the car’s finish can act as a magnifying glass multiplying the heat of the sun and ruining the finish.
  • The best way to start of the car washing is the give the car a good rinse down with the hose just to life and wash away dirt and grime. After that use bug and tar remover for the hard to get spots (give 2-3 minutes to soak.)
  • Next, fill two buckets of water put the recommended amount of car soap into one bucket and leave the second with plain water.
  • Starting from the top of the car down, gently use a microfiber glove to scrub down the car. Following each application of soapy water wash the glove in clean water before wiping down the car.

Rule #3:  Do not wash your tires with car soap:

  • Wheels require a special cleaner to safely remove brake dust and road grime. And on top of that wheel protectant safeguards the wheel and helps reduce brake dust build up for future cleanings!

Rule #4: Do a final rinse the dry right away:

  • To help minimize the chance of water spots don’t spray the hose just let it run freely over the surface, which helps prevent water beading.
  • Use your microfiber glove/cloth to wipe down the, it’s never a good idea to just let it air dry because of spotting and beading.
