Summer is in the air and that means humidity is too. There is no escaping it, usually hot weather means we get humidity and with that comes some pretty crazy storms. Now storms aren’t all bad, they usually do break the humidity, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t dangerous. Summer storms tend to be quick but can leave lots of flooding, making it hard to drive in and mask potential hazards in the road. We get a lot of rain here in Pennsylvania, but not as much as other places. If you’ll be hitting the road this summer to unknown places, it might be a good idea to check out our helpful tips below. Below you’ll find tips for making it through a flooded area after or during a storm, and even if you won’t be traveling this summer it’s always good information to have! So check it out and if you find your vehicle is damaged during a storm, just schedule a service appointment with us and we can get your ride back into tip-top- shape!

Do not drive through standing water on roads or in parking lots:

  • It’s easy to think we can just drive through standing water if we go slow, but the truth is the average automobile can be swept off the road in 12 inches of moving water!
  • Driving through water can also stall your engine which could cause damage if you try to restart the engine.
  • If you come along a flooded road or lot, try to find an alternative route to your destination!

Take extra precautions if you’re forced to drive through water:

  • Do your best to estimate the depth of the water (if other cars are driving through, take note of how deep the water is).
  • Drive slowly and steadily through the water.
  • Avoid driving in water that downed electrical or power lines have fallen in — electric current passes through water easily.
  • Watch for items traveling downstream — they can trap or crush you if you’re in their path.
  • If you have driven through water up to the wheel rims or higher, test your brakes on a clear patch of road at low speed. If they are wet and not stopping the vehicle as they should, dry them by pressing gently on the brake pedal with your left foot while maintaining speed with your right foot.
  • Stay off the telephone unless you must report severe injuries.
  • If your vehicle stalls in the deep water, you may need to restart the engine to make it to safety. Keep in mind that restarting may cause irreparable damage to the engine.
  • If you can’t restart your vehicle and you become trapped in rising water, immediately abandon it for higher ground. Try to open the door or roll down the window to get out of the vehicle. If you are unable to get out safely, call 911 or get the attention of a passerby or someone standing on higher ground so that they may call for help.

Hello May! With summer right around the corner, we have officially entered road trip season and that means you need your vehicle to be in tip-top shape to get you from the morning hike to your afternoon at the beach and still make it to the concert later that night. But let’s face it, all that running around can do some wear and tear on your vehicle and when that happens it is important to get your vehicle detailed and clean sooner than later.

If you skip out on giving your vehicle a good old scrubba dub dub, you could potentially cause damage to your vehicle’s exterior, which is bad because not only does it look bad but it also brings the value of your vehicle down. So, this week we want to help ensure your vehicle looks as good as it feels to drive, and if you’re driving a Nissan that feels pretty great. Take a few minutes to learn some tips for cleaning your vehicle’s exterior and if you have any questions feel free to give us a call! If you’re not about the DIY maintenance, no problem, just schedule a service appointment with us and we can get your ride sparkling again in no time!

Loughead Nissan’s Tips For Detailing Your Exterior:

Rule #1: Only use products meant for cleaning automobiles:

  • Using cleaners like dish soap or laundry detergent can strip away your car’s wax leaving the finish unprotected, unlike products meant for automobiles which actually loosens the grime and dirt while nourishing your finish.

Rule #2: Wash your car in the shade:

  • Always wash your car in the shade, if the water dries on the finish before you’ve had a chance to dry it, it could cause spotting.
  • Washing in the shade is also important because a bead of water on the car’s finish can act as a magnifying glass multiplying the heat of the sun and ruining the finish.
  • The best way to start of the car washing is the give the car a good rinse down with the hose just to life and wash away dirt and grime. After that use bug and tar remover for the hard to get spots (give 2-3 minutes to soak.)
  • Next, fill two buckets of water put the recommended amount of car soap into one bucket and leave the second with plain water.
  • Starting from the top of the car down, gently use a microfiber glove to scrub down the car. Following each application of soapy water wash the glove in clean water before wiping down the car.

Rule #3:  Do not wash your tires with car soap:

  • Wheels require a special cleaner to safely remove brake dust and road grime. And on top of that wheel protectant safeguards the wheel and helps reduce brake dust build up for future cleanings!

Rule #4: Do a final rinse the dry right away:

  • To help minimize the chance of water spots don’t spray the hose just let it run freely over the surface, which helps prevent water beading.
  • Use your microfiber glove/cloth to wipe down the, it’s never a good idea to just let it air dry because of spotting and beading.

Spring is here and we’re all looking to spend more time out in the sun! That means the roads are going to be a bit busier, and not just with other cars! Motorcyclists will be out and about as well! As a driver, it’s essential to take precautions to keep yourself and other road users safe, including motorcyclists. Motorcycles are smaller and less visible than cars, making them more vulnerable to accidents. Here is Loughead Nissan’s list of tips to keep motorcyclists safe on the roads:

  • Check your mirrors frequently: Make it a habit to check your mirrors frequently, especially when changing lanes or turning. This can help you spot motorcycles that may be in your blind spots.
  • Keep a safe distance: Motorcycles can stop much faster than cars, so keep a safe following distance of at least three to four seconds to avoid rear-ending them.
  • Use your turn signals: Always use your turn signals when changing lanes or turning to alert other drivers, including motorcyclists, of your intentions.
  • Avoid distractions: Distracted driving is dangerous for all road users, including motorcyclists. Avoid texting, eating, or anything else that takes your attention away from the road.

Spring is finally here and boy are we glad it is! Flowers will begin to bloom, birds will begin to sing, and we’ll all have to get started on our spring cleaning checklist! To help you get going on yours, Loughead Nissan has put together our top 5 spring cleaning tips! Check those tips out below and if you want your vehicle to be spring fresh inside and out, don’t hesitate to schedule your service appointment at our Nissan Service Center today!

Loughead Nissan’s Top 5 Spring Cleaning Tips:

Change out your winter tires.

  • Leaving your winter tires on during all four seasons can actually cause a lot of damage and even be dangerous. Once it looks like the coast is clear and we won’t be getting any more snow, set a day aside to change out your tire.

Wash your car’s exterior.

  • Wash and wax your vehicle’s exterior to get rid of dust, dirt, and salt that has built up during the winter. If left unprotected from the elements your car could be susceptible to fading paint, scratches, and rust!

Clean out your trunk.

  • Our truck is basically our closet on the go. We tend to throw a lot of useless stuff in there. Well, it’s time to rip off the bandaid and take everything out. Keep only the most important items, make some space for new things, and don’t forget to shake out the trunk carpet liner.

Clean the interior.

  • It’s dangerous to have your floors covered in clutter! Roll up your sleeves and take out any items that don’t belong! You should also check under the seats and vacuum all the dirt and dried salt. Don’t ignore your vehicle’s seats! Vacuum the cracks and whip down the seats as best you can!

Take a look under the hood.

  • Under the hood is where the heart of your vehicle lives. Make sure that it is clear of debris and dead leaves! A clean engine prolongs the life of your vehicle as well as prevents any further mechanical issues.

We all love spring right?! Fresh starts and blooming buds chase away the dreary winter! But, one thing about spring that may not be as much fun is the pollen that’s in the air. Irritating your eyes, nose, throat, and more, people who are sensitive to allergens may really have a hard time in the months ahead! Well, fear not! Loughead Nissan has put together a guide on how to allergy-proof your vehicle this Spring! Check that out below, and if you don’t have the time or tools to take on this job alone, schedule a service appointment at our Nissan Service Center and let our team get your ride sparkling clean!

Loughead Nissan’s Guide For Allergy-Proofing Your Ride:

Scrub It Down (Inside & Out)

  • Starting by wiping down your dashboard, seating, and vents as often as possible with a damp microfiber cloth. This’ll help contain the pollen on the cloth instead of just spreading it around or reintroducing it to the air. Next, vacuum your carpeting and be sure to clean and let your floor mats dry completely in a covered space. Finally, be sure to stop by the car wash to hose down your car’s exterior so as to clear it of any pollen that may accumulate.

Be Conscious Of What You Bring In

  • Oftentimes your clothing and shoes are the way allergens get carried into your ride. While we can’t avoid this completely, removing the top layer of clothing you may have had on– like a jacket, scarf, or hat– could help keep allergens out of your ride. Try storing them in a separate area like a plastic bin in your trunk or a bag in the back seat. And while we know it’s tempting to roll them down to feel the spring breeze, be sure to keep your windows closed during peak pollen times to keep allergens out.

Replace Your Filters And Floor Mats

  • If you can’t remember the last time you changed your air filters, then now is the perfect time to get some new ones. All-weather floor mats are a great way to cut back on the number of allergens that make your carpeting their home. In fact it’d probably be a good idea to wrap all of the cloth surfaces in your car with washable covers as it makes it easier to clean them.
