Living in Pennsylvania you know that the weather can be a bit crazy at times. And with September coming to a close and October rounding the corner, there’s one thing that we know for sure and that is that winter is coming. Don’t freak out quite yet, there’s no white stuff falling from the sky, but it is time to get our vehicle ready for what is to come. This week we are focusing on your tires and their tread. Below you will find our easy guide on checking your tire’s tread and when it’s time to replace them. Check it out and schedule your next service appointment online today! You should be monitoring your tread depth closely once it reaches 4/32 inches deep. 4/32” or deeper = your tread is still in good shape 3/32” = your tread is wearing and you should replace soon 2/32” = it’s time to replace your tires as soon as possible Now, put your tread to the test with these easy-to-follow tests: The Penny Test Insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down into the tread facing toward you. If you can see all of the head, your tread depth is less than 2/32” and it is time to replace your tires. The Quarter Test We want to recreate the same test but instead of a penny, we are going to use a quarter. If the tread reaches Washington’s head on the quarter, you have at least 4/32” of tread remaining. This means that your tire’s tread is still in good health! Don’t have change? We have you covered! Take a look at your tread wear indicator bar that is molded into the tread of your tires. Bars are located at the bottom of tread grooves in multiple locations; when these bars are visibly flush with the adjacent ribs, your tire has no more than 2/32” of tread left. Make sure your battery is prepared for high temps Many people think battery issues only happen in the wintertime but that’s not true. In fact, extreme temperatures have an impact on your battery, no matter if it is the heat or the cold. Heat and vibration are your battery’s worst enemy which will lead to an internal breakdown and eventual failure. So, make sure your battery is securely fastened in your vehicle, properly cleaned, and charged ready to go. Keep your tires properly inflated Your tires should always be filled to proper PSI levels, but driving on under-inflated tires can cause tires to overheat and eventually blow out which is extremely dangerous to yourself, your passengers, and other drivers. Make a note to check your tire’s PSI at least once a month (even the spare) and be sure to do so when they are cold for the best, most accurate reading. Keep your engine cool An overheated engine is very common in the hot, summer heat. But if you keep your coolant at the proper levels and periodically flush out your engine, the chances of your engine overheating are slim! If you choose to top off your coolant yourself, be sure to let your vehicle cool down and NEVER open your radiator cap when the engine is hot! Inspect what’s under the hood Oftentimes, we forget about all the components that are working hard under the hood to help get us to where we want to be during the summer months! Well, we’re here to remind you to give them a look over. Check on your engine’s hoses, drive belts, and anything susceptible to heat-related deterioration. These things can lead to a breakdown which is what we’re trying to avoid. So, spend a few minutes when your vehicle is cool & make sure there are no cracks, soft spots, or any other signs of poor condition! Service With Us Today!

You know the mornings that never seem to end? The ones where it starts off wrong with not finding a sock, then your shirts are all dirty, and then your car won’t start. Who actually keeps track of the last time they changed their car battery? Not many people. There is that heat that rises up as you slowly turn that key, you can feel your blood start to boil, and that mean look that you just can’t seem to get off your face. Now, we’ve all done this. We’ve sat there turning the key, holding it tighter and pushing it in harder. Nope, not the way to go as that will break your key and your car quicker. Yup, that means your battery might be dead. Batteries usually take months, sometimes years to die depending on the vehicle itself. When you bring your battery and car to your service department, they can change it for you there. There are more ways than just turning your key and have it not work. Here they are: The car battery does not only power the engine, but also needs enough power to run the electronic components in the car ie. power windows, power seats, radio, etc. Light on dashboard- The battery shape light on your dashboard will be going off when you get to that point that your battery needs more attention. Once the light does come on, it would be in your best interest to have that checked out by a professional. Your battery case looks a bit swollen: This is caused by a chemical reaction within the box. This comes from really hot or really cold weather conditions. Old battery: A battery works about four to five years until it needs or should be replaced. Once the battery is old, the battery does not have much life left. Certain smell: Overcharged or froze, the car battery produces a smell of rotten eggs. Yuck! It is essential to have your battery looked at by your service department. The lifeline of a car battery is usually four to five years, so once the four years start to hit, you should be getting that checked out! Ask your service advisor for the technician to tell you how much they think you have left with your current battery. A dead battery can happen to anyone at any given time, so it is better to be proactive and stay on top of how long you’ve had a new battery. Your service department will help with this!
