We are nearly halfway through the month of November and if you haven’t seen snow yet, we have a feeling that it won’t be much more time before you do. It is inevitable that you’ll have to drive in the snow, ice, or both before the summer weather comes back to us. That's why it is important to ensure that your vehicle is in tip-top shape, especially your vehicle’s tires. Your vehicle’s tires have a lifespan just like anything else, and once they’re gone it is extremely dangerous to drive on! When your vehicle stops and goes it is not just because of the brakes and gas. In fact, your vehicle’s tires play a big role in bringing your car to a halt and going. In order for your car to move and not slide everywhere, your tires must have tread. The thicker your tread is the better grip your tires will have. If your tread is almost gone or bald, this means you could experience extreme slipping and sliding. In the winter months, it is important to have a thick tread, especially since snow and ice cause you to slip anyway. If your tire tread is fresh, you have a much better chance of stopping and less chance of an accident. If you are unsure if your tire tread is in good condition, you can bring it into our service center and we can check your tires, rotate your tires, or replace your tires. If you are more of a DIY person, there are several ways to check your tire tread. One of the simplest, most common ways to check tread depth requires nothing more than a penny and a few moments of your time. Check out all you need to know below! About The Tread: In the United States, tire tread depth is measured in 32nds of an inch. New tires typically come with 10/32” or 11/32” tread depths, and some truck, SUV and winter tires may have deeper tread depths than other models The U.S. Department of Transportation recommends replacing tires when they reach 2/32” The Penny Test: The idea of the penny test is to check whether you’ve hit the 2/32” threshold Place a penny between the tread ribs on your tire. Turn the penny so that Lincoln’s head points down into the tread. See if the top of his head disappears between the ribs. If it does, your tread is still above 2/32” If you can see his entire head, it may be time to replace the tire because your tread is no longer deep enough. It’s that simple! With winter right around the corner, it is important for us to get our vehicle ready for whatever mother nature might have in store. Unfortunately, we can’t know for sure when the snow will hit, it could be next month, next week, even tomorrow! We just don't know! From low tire pressure to frozen fuel lines to road salt damage, winter can take its toll on your vehicle. Here are five car care tips to prevent long-term damage: Winter Tires If you haven't done so already, it’s time to swap out those summer tires for winter tires If you haven’t changed your tires in a while, it might be time to purchase a new set If you think you don’t need to change your tires just because your town doesn't snow a lot, you’re wrong! If your city drops below 45 degrees you need to change your tires because they’re made to give you better traction while turning or stopping on cold pavement. Check tire pressure: Making sure your tires are inflated to the proper PSI is important, especially in the winter Driving on underinflated tires can cause them to wear down prematurely and lose traction on icy or slippery surfaces PLus, it is important to regularly check them because your tires lose a pound of pressure with every 10-degree drop in temperature. Keep your fuel tank half full at least During winter weather, it's a good idea to keep at least half a tank of fuel in the vehicle in the event of an emergency or if you get stuck in the snow and need to wait for rescue. Also if your tank level gets too low it can actually freeze Add a protective layer Adding a coat of wax can help protect your vehicle from road salt, grime, snow, sleet and more. Protect your windshield wipers If you park outdoors, leave the wipers in the raised position to prevent them from freezing to the windshield Never use your wiper blades to remove ice, snow or frost from the windshield; use an ice scraper instead. Who doesn’t love fall? It is the perfect weather for getting out and enjoying some fresh air! It’s never too hot or too cold it’s a perfect medium! Keep Calm and Drive On: The first thing to remember is not to panic. Don’t try to accelerate your way out of it. Patience is really key here, because the faster your wheels spin, the less likely they are to grab anything and the more likely they are to dig you in deeper. Wiggle, Wiggle: After you’ve asked everyone to leave the vehicle, try to turn your tires left and right a couple of time to clear out space. Take it a step further and dig out the tire with whatever you have to make it as flat as possible so the wheel can just roll out. A little Back and Forth: inching back and forth a little, make sure that all of your passengers are out of the car to reduce the weight. Reverse and then put it into drive. Shifting rapidly between forward and reverse is bad business for your transmission, so keep it to an absolute minimum. Opting to drive a little, then let off, allowing yourself to rock a bit is the best practice. DIY Time: Mud slippage occurs because you can’t gain traction, so do what you can to add some. Put an old blanket or towel, sticks or floor mats directly in front of the tires on the drive axle. Figure out which tire is spinning and give that tire the attention. Phone a Friend: If none of these options are working, you might want to call a friend for help, or a tow truck if there is no one. Try flagging down another car and see if the can help pull you out. This includes keeping all of your fluid levels at the proper spots! So pop open that hood (there is a lever inside your vehicle) and fill up some fluids! If you feel that you aren’t able to do this on your own we advise you ask for help or get professional help! If you need help filling you fluids give us a call or come into Loughead Nissan, we’d love to help! Oil Your oil cools your engine, lubricates moving parts, and keeps the moving parts clean. You should change it regularly based on dealer recommendation and check it monthly! Coolant Coolant regulates your vehicle’s temperature. It is located in a reservoir near the radiator. If the level is low (level is indicated on the reservoir) take the vehicle to the shop to get your coolant topped up. Power Steering Fluid This helps you steer the vehicle. It’s located in a reservoir at the base of your windshield. Do the same as above, if the level is low take your vehicle to the shop to get the fluid topped up. Brake Fluid Brake fluid helps braking mechanisms work properly. If the level is chronically low, your brakes could be wearing out. Windshield Washer Fluid As you probably know, this helps clean your windshield of dust, debris, bug guts, etc. If you run out, get more at your local gas station and just refill the clearly labeled tank.
