Diagnose Your Vehicle’s Leaking Fluids With Loughead Nissan’s Color Guide | Swarthmore, PA

Last week, we taught you how to change the coolant in your ride! And while we’re sure you did a great job, there are a few things to look out for with your ride! This week we’ve put together a color guide so you know what to look out for to keep your ride running smoothly! Check out Loughead Nissan’s color guide to your vehicles leaking fluid so you can diagnose the issue with ease! And in the unfortunate event that the leak is something serious, conveniently schedule your service appointment at Loughead Nissan’s Service Center today! Loughead Nissan’s Color Guide To Fluid Leaks Clear: This is usually water from the air conditioning building up excess condensation and resulting in puddles of water underneath your vehicle. Unless this problem persists in great quantities, you’ve got nothing to worry about! Yellow, Green, or Pink: Due to their bright colors, these leaks are usually easy to spot. If your vehicle is an older model and there are only a few spots here and there it’s not something to worry about. But, if there are larger puddles of this fluid or your vehicle is newer, this coolant shouldn’t be dripping any excess liquids so it might be a good idea to bring it in to a professional. Orange: If there is orange/reddish-brown fluid leaking from the center of your vehicle, it could be transmission fluid. However, rust from your radiator mixing with an antifreeze leak can appear orange-ish as well, but can leak from multiple spots so placement is a key determining factor with this one. Red(ish): Power steering fluid appears red in color with a thin texture and will leak from under the front part of your car. If this is the case, there is an issue with the power steering pump and you should seek out a service professional. Light yellow to dark brown: Brake fluid starts out as a clear/yellow color and as it ages it becomes dark brown, similar to motor oil. Distinguish between the two by dipping your finger in it. If the fluid feels slippery, it’s likely brake fluid. If this is the case, your vehicle is not safe to drive and you’re going to want to have it towed it in for repair as soon as possible. LIght brown to black: If the fluid leaking from your vehicle is a brownish/black color with an iridescent hue, chances are its motor oil. This can leak from various spots of your vehicle and won’t stop your vehicle dead, but it means that there is an ongoing issue and you should bring your vehicle in for a professional examination

Too Cool(ant) For You! | Swarthmore,PA

Keeping calm cool and relaxed this summer is the goal, but if you’re riding all around town your vehicle is going to need some real TLC to keep up. Just like us, our vehicles take a beating from the hot summer heat, and if you don’t give it regular maintenance you might find yourself broken down and dishing out some serious cash. We know that would put a damper on your summer plans, that’s why this week we are telling you about one important way to keep your vehicle cool for the summer without any issues. Topping off your vehicle's coolant is essential in the summer. The coolant or antifreeze helps keep your engine cool to avoid overheating. If your coolant level falls below the recommended line or has gone bad your engine could experience some issues. To avoid this headache, check out simple steps below and or schedule a service appointment today! Steps: Open the hood of the car: First pop the hood lifting the latch inside your car, then when the hood pops it won't crack the whole way. Slip your hand in between the crack and move the safety lever which unlocks the hood allowing you to lift it all the way. Locate the engine coolant reservoir. This will be to the far side of the vehicle, left or right, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. The lid to the reservoir will often have “Engine Coolant Only” printed on it. Look out for the line on the side of the engine coolant reservoir and a heading of “COLD” or “FULL”. There may also be a “WARM” level indicator. The “COLD” indicator is the one you want to use. Add engine coolant to the reservoir if the liquid is below the “COLD” indicator line. Observe to see that the engine coolant reservoir is holding the added liquid. If it falls below the “COLD” indicator before your next check, there may be a leak. Any leak needs to be checked out and repaired as soon as possible!

Do It Yourself Detailing Tips | Swarthmore, PA

The summer is all about DIY! Don’t know what DIY is? Well, let me tell you! DIY stands for do it yourself, and it can be applied to literally anything! Yup, that means car maintenance too! So if you’re not a big fan of heading into the dealership to have other people do work on your vehicle that you are capable of doing yourself, then you’re going to love this week’s blog! This week we are focusing on DIY car washes and detailing. Many of us probably don’t see the importance of washing our vehicle regularly because the rain does it for us, right? WRONG! That might wash away dust and debris, but it isn’t going to wash away the tough grime that has accumulated on your vehicle. Plus, the longer that grim stays on your vehicle and tires the more damage it could do. So that means it’s time to roll up your sleeves and grab your products because we’re about to throw some straight up facts at you! If you’re not a DIY individual that’s okay too! All you have to do to get your vehicle back into tip-top shape and looking as good as it feels is schedule a service appointment with us and head on into Loughead Nissan today! Part 1: Wash Your Vehicle Washing your vehicle regularly keeps dirt, debris, and gritty residue that can accumulate over time, off your exterior. Start washing your vehicle from the top (the roof) down. Use a soft-bristled brush, in small, circular motions, to remove more stubborn stains and grease. Use a microfiber cloth to clean less dirty areas. DO NOT USE REGULAR DISH SOAP. These substances are designed to remove grease and oil, and they can damage your car's finish, not to mention strip away the vehicle's protective wax coating. It is important to rinse your vehicle as you go to prevent the soap and water from drying on your vehicle. Try not to take too long while washing your car so that the water does not dry, leaving behind mineral deposits in the form of water spots. Part 2: Drying Your Car Dry your vehicle by hand. Start drying as soon as your done with the basic wash. This keeps water from drying and leaving spots. Use a microfiber towel to absorb the water. DO NOT DRAG THE TOWEL ACROSS THE CAR. Debris and dirt can be trapped under the towel and potentially scratch the paint. Drying your car to remove the majority of the moisture, allow it to air dry completely before proceeding to the detailing phase. Part 3: Detail Your Car Most often, basic washing does not remove smaller particles and substances that might stick to or are worked into the paint job itself. Items you may need include Compound, Clay bars, Glaze, and Polish. Before using any detailing method, make sure you understand how to use it properly. USE A MICROFIBER MITT OR TOWEL. Don't forget to clean and shine your tires, which are one of the most overlooked areas of a vehicle. When doing so, clean, wash, and polish one tire at a time to prevent the cleaner from drying on the tires in patches. Step 4: Wax Your Car After washing, drying, and detailing the outside of your vehicle, seal it with wax. You only need to wax your car about every three months, so this process is not required every time you wash your car. When using a buffer, be careful because overuse could lead to paint removal Apply wax - using a microfiber towel, or a clean buffing pad using the car buffer Allow the wax to set - Proceed with applying the wax a section at a time, allowing the wax to set before removal. Check the wax container for directions on use and recommended wax set times. Buff the wax in - Take a microfiber cloth and use circular motions with the buffer to rub in the wax. Repeat this process until you have waxed the entire surface of the vehicle

It’s Time To Get Your Ride Spring Ready! | Swarthmore, PA

Spring is finally here and boy are we glad it is! Flowers will begin to bloom, birds will begin to sing, and we’ll all have to get started on our spring cleaning checklist! To help you get going on yours, Loughead Nissan has put together our top 5 spring cleaning tips! Check those tips out below and if you want your vehicle to be spring fresh inside and out, don’t hesitate to schedule your service appointment at our Nissan Service Center today! Loughead Nissan’s Top 5 Spring Cleaning Tips: Change out your winter tires. Leaving your winter tires on during all four seasons can actually cause a lot of damage and even be dangerous. Once it looks like the coast is clear and we won’t be getting any more snow, set a day aside to change out your tire. Wash your car’s exterior. Wash and wax your vehicle’s exterior to get rid of dust, dirt, and salt that has built up during the winter. If left unprotected from the elements your car could be susceptible to fading paint, scratches, and rust! Clean out your trunk. Our truck is basically our closet on the go. We tend to throw a lot of useless stuff in there. Well, it’s time to rip off the bandaid and take everything out. Keep only the most important items, make some space for new things, and don’t forget to shake out the trunk carpet liner. Clean the interior. It’s dangerous to have your floors covered in clutter! Roll up your sleeves and take out any items that don’t belong! You should also check under the seats and vacuum all the dirt and dried salt. Don’t ignore your vehicle’s seats! Vacuum the cracks and whip down the seats as best you can! Take a look under the hood. Under the hood is where the heart of your vehicle lives. Make sure that it is clear of debris and dead leaves! A clean engine prolongs the life of your vehicle as well as prevents any further mechanical issues.

Find Out If Your Windshield Wipers Are Worn Out! | Swarthmore, PA

When you think about the safety features of your vehicle, you probably think airbags, emergency brakes, and blind spot monitoring technology. But what if we told you that you’re overlooking an important piece of equipment? Windshield wipers are often an underrated and forgotten part of your everyday drive! That’s why you need to make sure that your wipers are in tip-top shape and routinely check them for wear and tear. Do you know the warning signs that indicate your wipers are worn out? Do you know what factors to try and avoid to extend the longevity of your wipers? Take a look below, and if your vehicle is in need of some serious maintenance, schedule your service appointment with the Loughead Nissan team today! When you’re checking out your wiper blades, look for these indicators of wear: Broken frame: detachment of frame arms at joints or connection points. Metal Corrosion: especially at joints and claws. Visible cracks, tears, and missing pieces in the rubber squeegee’s edge. Flex rubber squeegee back and forth to see if it is still flexible. Aged squeegees will have difficulty conforming to the shape of your windshield and create streaks. Check squeegee wiping edge for rounded edges which can prevent the wiper blade from making strong contact with the windshield and reduces wipe quality. Tug to ensure the wiper blade has been securely installed on the wiper arm. Check that squeegee is secure in the wiper frame. Your wipers can break down due to several factors: Sun: Ultraviolet light and ozone deterioration Oil: Car waxes and exhaust hold rubber-deteriorating oil Airborne debris: Sand, mud and dust carried in the wind Moisture: Acid rain and salt water (in moist air both near the shore and inland)
