Read Loughead Nissan’s Back To School Car Care Tips | Swarthmore, PA

Summer is in full swing, but as we get ready to say goodbye to July and hello to August, back to school season approaches! Whether you’ll be heading back to school yourself or your son/daughter will be, your friends here at Loughead Nissan want to remind you not to forget about your vehicle. If you plan on packing up your room and heading to college, it’s important to make sure your vehicle is in shape to get you there. That’s why this week we want to bring you 6 essential car care tips you should do before you hit the road! So take a peek below and get ready to get back to school. Need maintenance or repairs before making the drive? Schedule a service appointment with our certified professionals now! Loughead Nissan’s Back To School Car Care Tips: Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated Improper tire pressure can cause you to get fewer miles per gallon? It can also increase wear and tear, resulting in a need to replace the tires sooner than normal, and becoming very costly. To keep your tires in tip-top shape, keep a tire gauge in your car and check the pressure monthly. Check for wear and tear by utilizing the “penny test” by inserting an upside-down penny in the tread groove. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to get new tires. Top off all the fluids Regular oil changes are a must, but that isn’t the only fluid you should be keeping an eye on in your vehicle. Keep an eye out for transmission, brakes, coolants, and more. Clean fluids help your engine run smoothly, while dirty fluids can cause damage. Don’t forget your wipers You don’t want to be driving down the highway, and go to use your wipers and have no washer fluid! Your windshield wiper fluid needs to be topped off to ensure you have good visibility in poor weather. Wiper blades need regular replacement too, usually every six to twelve months. Check your seatbelts—and wear them. Buckle up and stay safe this school year. Simply wearing a properly fitted seatbelt saves thousands of lives each year. It’s one of the most effective ways to avoid serious injury in an accident. Airbags alone are not enough to protect you. Make sure your seatbelt is secured tightly across the pelvis and rib cage. Take a peek at your lights. Headlight or taillight out? Lights out on your vehicle are very dangerous. A burned-out headlight can impair your ability to see the road clearly, increasing the risk of a flat tire or accident. While a burnt-out taillight can make it hard to see you. Simply turn your lights on while the car is in park, and walk around the entire vehicle to make sure your headlights, rear lights, blinkers, and hazards are functioning properly. Not only will this keep you safe, but it will keep you from getting a pulled over/ a ticket. If you need replacement, just schedule a service appointment today. Take a break and get your brakes checked It’s no secret that your brakes are a crucial part of your drive. Worn brakes can make it hard to stop quickly and can cause your car to travel farther before coming to a halt — making it more likely you’ll find yourself in an accident. To avoid that, a professional mechanic should check your vehicle’s brakes regularly, preferably as part of a routine maintenance check performed during regular oil changes.

The Ultimate Check-Up For Your Nissan! | Swarthmore, PA

The holiday season is over, but winter is just beginning. We still have several months of winter weather ahead of us, and as many of you know, ever-changing and harsh weather conditions can be hard on your vehicle. That’s why it is important to keep your Nissan in tip-top shape with regular maintenance. The past couple of months has been pretty busy for all of us. Whether you’ve been running around getting gifts or traveling for the holidays, right now is the perfect time to pop open the hood and see what kind of condition your ride is in. Below you will find a maintenance checklist that is perfect for your ride’s checkup! However, if you don’t know much about your vehicle or you don’t have time to roll up your sleeves, don’t stress! Our team of certified technicians can get your vehicle back into tip-top shape in no time! Just head over to our website to schedule your service appointment now! Check and change the oil: Regular oil and filter changes will keep your engine’s life running longer Nothing will destroy an engine faster than neglecting oil-level checks or fresh-oil changes. Flush and change the cooling system: A 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water will keep the cooling system in good shape and prevent corrosion and deposits from building up inside the cooling system. Be sure to change your coolant once a year Change out transmission and differential oils: While not requiring frequent service, these fluids must be changed according to service intervals. Before topping off fluids, be sure that it is the proper oil and transmission fluid needed for your vehicle Clean it up: Washing your vehicle is obvious, but when it comes to cleaning the vehicle’s underside many of us fall short. Everything the vehicle ran over can also get stuck to the underside, hosing off winter salt and road grime is a good idea to keep from corrosion or build up. Grease it up: Everything with moving parts needs grease to survive, make sure the proper vehicle parts remain greased as needed Wax on, wax off: Nothing keeps your vehicle’s paint looking good and protected like a coat of quality wax. Wax should be applied every six months. Keep Driveline components Lubricated: Driveline components such as u-joints also require regular lubrication Protect it from harmful UVs: Protect the interior plastic by parking the vehicle in the shade, harmful UVs can deteriorate the plastic On sunny days, be sure to use a window deflector screen Applying a UV protectant to prevent the plastic and vinyl from drying out can also help Keep your wheels fresh to death: Inspect, clean, and repack wheel bearings with wheel bearing grease according to service intervals This is a pretty cheap task so you won’t break the bank doing so. Top off your brake fluid: Brake fluid   moisture, which causes components to corrode and fail Replacing the brake fluid and bleed system once a year will keep from damage happening Brake fluid is pretty cheap Service Your Nissan Now: https://www.lougheadnissan.com/Service-Appointment-Scheduler.html

Is Your Car Smelly? See What It Could Be! | Swarthmore, PA

Sure, owning a vehicle is all fun and games until you realize there could be something wrong with it. For example, if you’re vehicle is starting to smell bad while the engine is running, there could be something wrong with it. But what is it? Luckily for you, there is no reason to freak out because we have a few smells and their cause listed out right here for you! Take a look and if you have questions or would like to set up a service appointment to have your Nissan serviced, give us a call or schedule online today! We look forward to working with you and your Nissan! You Smell: Rotten eggs What It Is: This could mean that your catalytic converter is having issues. And hydrogen sulfide could be making its way into your exhaust. This could simply be a fuel injection issue, or your cat is failing. Unfortunately, this could end up being a pretty expensive repair and lastly, if you smell the rotten eggs when your vehicle is turned off, that funky smell could just be some old food stuck under your seat or an old gym bag! You Smell: Hot oil What It Is: The easiest smell of all to diagnose is hot oil. This happens when oil leaks onto your exhaust manifold which is hot due to your engine running. This smell is not pleasant so you’ll probably notice it right away! Take a look around your engine and vehicle to look for leaks. Also, keep an eye out for any smoke. If you can find the leak, try to stem it, then bring your car to the shop as soon as possible. You Smell: Sulfur What It Is: When you smell sulfur in your car, it’s safe to assume that it is gear lubricant leaking from either the manual transmission, transfer case, or differential housing. Sulfur compounds in the oil are used as extreme pressure lubricants for gears and after being in use for a while, these substances can get smelly and gross. Check for those oily puddles under your vehicle and if you notice any, bring your ride in for a check-up! You Smell: Maple syrup What It Is: While this one might sound delicious, it’s most definitely toxic! The coolant has ethylene glycol in it, which makes this smell a bit concerning. If you’re smell maple syrup, that means there’s a leak somewhere and you’ll want to stop in for our technicians to take a look! This can be a simple fix but it’s best to have a certified technician treat this. You Smell: A gas station What It Is: If you’re not sitting next to a gas station, this is an issue. If your car is on the older side (i.e. before 1980) then you could be smelling gas when you turn your vehicle off and have no issue. But, if your vehicle is newer, the smell of gasoline could mean a leak from your fuel injection line or fuel tank vent hose. Either way, it’s best to play this safe and stop in to see our team for a service check-up.

Quick Lesson On Your Nissan Fluid Levels! | Swarthmore, PA

Happy Car Care Month! We hope you have been taking full advantage of the warm weather by hitting the road for some fun in the sun. Speaking of hitting the road, we want to remind you how important it is to service your car before hitting the road. Putting off service is a common thought for many drivers, but it’s not a safe one. Without regular maintenance, it’s a stronger possibility you run into issues on the road ahead. In order to avoid that, regular maintenance is strongly recommended. However, there is DIY maintenance that many Nissan drivers can complete from the comfort of their own home - like topping off their fluid levels! Not sure what fluid levels you should be looking out for? No problem, take a peek below for all you need to know about your Nissan’s fluid levels and get better peace of mind when you hit the road this spring/summer. Engine Oil: Your engine needs oil in order to keep moving parts lubricated and working properly. To check your oil, make sure your engine is cool before popping open the hood. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it on a clean rag, reinsert the stick all the way back into the tank. Pull out the stick and see where the oil line hits, there will be a notch that indicates what a safe oil level is. If your oil hits below the notch, check for the specific type of oil and add some yourself. Transmission Fluid: Transmission fluid is important because it keeps your transmission lubricated and will save you from expensive repairs. The second dipstick in your engine is for this fluid. Like we did to check the engine’s oil, you will have to remove the dipstick, wipe it off, and reinsert it back into the tank. Pull it back out and examine where the fluid hits on the stick, it’s also a good idea to check the quality of your fluids. Wipe a small amount onto your fingers, if the fluid has a pink or clear look to it, it is fine. If the fluid smells burnt or has particles in it, it is time to swap it out. Brake Fluid: From a safety standpoint, this is one of the most important fluids. Brake fluid basically keeps you from running into other cars and objects. You’ll find the brake fluid reservoir toward the back under your hood, be sure to clean off the outside of the compartment so any dirt or dust doesn’t enter the reservoir. Open up the cap and look inside to see where the fluid level is. It should be about a half-inch from the cap. If it is lower than that, check your owner’s manual for what fluid you should use. Also, if the fluid has a dark tint to it, bring your vehicle into our service department for a change of fluids. Power Steering Fluid: It’s important to have control over your car and this fluid keeps the right parts lubricated to ensure a safe driving experience. This reservoir is typically found under the hood, on the passenger side with a cap that will likely say “steering” on it. Many cars have a light-colored reservoir so you can see the level of fluid without removing the cap. If your car has a dark reservoir, clean off the cap before opening it to avoid dirt particles from entering the system. Open up the cap and use the dipstick the same way as we did before, if the fluid is low, you can easily add more. Also, if your fluid level is low, check for a leak in the system. Windshield Washer Fluid: One important part of driving is being able to see out the windshield, this fluid is key to ensure that happens. Most vehicles have a clear washer fluid tank that will be labeled either “washer” or “windshield.” If you need to add more, simply pop the cap off and pour it into the tank. Do not use soap and water if you are completely empty!! But, the window cleaner that you use at home can work until you fill up with the real stuff. Is it time for an upgrade? Look no further because Loughead Nissan has an impressive lineup of new, used and pre-owned Nissan vehicles for you to choose from!
